Utah's Nevill and Pitt swingman Young to work out for Jazz this weekend

Utah's Nevill and Pitt swingman Young to work out for Jazz this weekend
University of Pittsburgh swingman Sam Young headlines a group of six NBA Draft prospects scheduled to work out for the Jazz this morning, and 7-foot-2 University of Utah center Luke Nevill is among those slated to visit with the team Sunday. Joining the 6-foot-7 Young today will be Xavier power forward Derrick Brown, Florida State shooting guard Toney Douglas, Oklahoma small forward Taylor Griffin, Syracuse shooting guard Paul Harris and Washington guard Justin Dentmon. Young is ESPN.com draft specialist Chad Ford's current projected pick for the Jazz at No. 20 in the first round of Thursday night's draft, and Douglas is mentioned by Ford as a possible pick for Utah as well. Brown also is a late first-round prospect, and Griffin ? a possible second-rounder ?

is the older brother of anticipated No. 1 overall selection Blake Griffin. Young is a 24-year-old who averaged 19.2 points per game and shot 50.2 percent from the field as a senior at Pitt. He played mostly at small forward in college, but the Jazz see him as an NBA shooting guard. "I think he's a wing player," Jazz player personnel vice president Walt Perrin said Friday. "I think he's probably going to be projected, because of his size, to two guard. "He shoots fairly well coming off a screen ... but he's really more of a catch-and-shoot type shooter," Perrin said. "That's why you look as him more as a two." Second-round hopeful Nevill is scheduled to work out Sunday along with another ex-Ute, Shaun Green. Green, who is not expected to be drafted, also worked out for the Jazz last Monday as a last-minute, fill-in replacement when Georgia Tech's Gani Lawal decided to return to school. Also scheduled to visit on Sunday are Connecticut power forward Jeff Adrien, UCLA point guard Darren Collison, Houston center Marcus Cousin, Gonzaga power forward Josh Heytvelt, Wake Forest power forward James Johnson and Gonzaga point guard Jeremy Pargo. Johnson is identified as another possible Jazz pick by Ford, but both he and Collison could be gone before Utah picks at No. 20. Heytvelt also is a potential late first-round pick, according to Ford's top-100 prospects rankings. BOOZER BABBLE: A one-liner from the New York Post's Peter Vecsey: "So far, the $30 (million)-under-the-cap (Detroit) Pistons are said to have prioritized free agents Carlos Boozer, Ben Gordon, (Hedo) Turkoglu and (Trevor) Ariza." ALUMNI UPDATE: According to the Philadelphia Daily News, 76ers free agent and ex- Jazz forward Donyell Marshall "is recovering from surgery last week on his right wrist, resolving a problem that 'bothered me all season.'?" The newspaper reported that Marshall isn't sure if he'll play again next season, so he's also "showing interest" in a job serving as an analyst for Sixers games on Comcast SportsNet. "I've played 14 years, and normally there might be teams that would keep a player like me to help work with the younger guys," Marshall told the Daily News. "But the economy hurts everybody; teams are making cuts they might not normally make. Maybe they only keep 13 or 14 players instead of 15, and that impacts somebody like me." COACHING CANDIDATE: Several media outlets reported late this week that retired NBA point guard and current ESPN/ABC NBA television analyst Mark Jackson is a candidate for the newly vacant Minnesota Timberwolves head coaching job. Jackson was John Stockton's final backup at the point with the Jazz , and he played at Indiana when new Timberwolves Basketball boss David Kahn was an assistant general manager with the Pacers.
