Spurs deal Timberwolves 13th loss in a row

Spurs deal Timberwolves 13th loss in a row
SAN ANTONIO -- The Timberwolves couldn't give Kevin McHale a win for Christmas, and New Year's is starting to look awfully iffy.

The Wolves will have four more tries before then after having their losing streak extended to 13 games Tuesday night by the San Antonio Spurs, who held on for a 99-93 victory at ATT Center.

Tony Parker scored 36 points, and Tim Duncan added 19 points and 12 rebounds for the Spurs (18-10), who saw a 16-point lead entering the final quarter cut to three before they beat Minnesota for the third time this season and eighth straight overall.

Al Jefferson had 28 points, and Randy Foye added 26 and a career-high 16 rebounds to lead the Wolves, who fell to 0-8 under McHale and are just three losses short of the team record of 16 set in 1992 and equaled in '94.

For the record, the Wolves' next three games are at New York (11-16) on Friday, followed by home contests against Orlando (22-6) on Saturday and Memphis (9-19) on Monday before a Tuesday date against Dallas (16-11) to ring out the year.

Suffice to say there are no sure things in there for the Wolves, who haven't won since a 105-103 victory at Oklahoma City on Nov. 28 and admitted that the streak is on their minds.

"I don't want to set no record, especially a record like that," Foye said. "I like setting records for rebounds."

Foye did just that with his 16 rebounds, a team record for a guard, breaking the mark of 15 set by Isaiah Rider in 1996.

In the end, though, some questionable calls and Parker were too much to overcome.

"Tony Parker is a beast," Jefferson said. "That's all I've got to say about him. He's a beast. He knows when to take over the game and get points on the board."

Not wanting to risk a fine, Jefferson didn't have much to say about the aforementioned calls, which included a kicking foul on a driving Sebastian Telfair with eight minutes to play and a ball that appeared to bounce off a fallen Manu Ginobili out of bounds but was awarded to the Spurs.

"I'm going to say that a lot of mistakes were made and all of them weren't made by us," Jefferson said. "That's all I'm going to say. If I get in trouble for saying that ... I know they're not perfect. They make mistakes just like we make mistakes."

The Spurs came out gunning from the start and stretched an early lead to 15 midway through the second quarter. But six consecutive Jefferson points and a Foye three-pointer helped the Wolves cut their deficit to 48-40 at halftime.

Minnesota scored the first seven points of the second half to cut it to one, but a three-pointer by Roger Mason Jr., a Duncan basket and two free throws by Michael Finley staked San Antonio to a six-point lead.

The Wolves were still within three with 6:26 to go in the third period, but the Spurs went on a 20-7 run, capped by Ginobili's three-pointer, to make it an 83-67 game heading into the final 12 minutes.

Jefferson got it down to three once again with 2:46 to go, but Duncan scored inside and, after Telfair split a pair of free throws, Parker hit a long jumper with the clock running down to seal the deal at 95-89.

Miller stays home: Shooting guard Mike Miller did not accompany the Wolves to San Antonio because of a sprained right ankle and is expected to miss Friday's game as well, although his status remains day to day.

With Miller out, Kevin Ollie started at point guard, finishing with two points and four assists in 23 minutes.
