Ryan Gomes, Al Jefferson power Minnesota Timberwolves past Golden State Warriors
Ryan Gomes had talked about using the new year to make a fresh start.

Friday night, the Timberwolves' starting small forward made it happen, putting up his first double-double of the season to lead his team to a 115-108 victory over Golden State in front of 11,921 at Target Center.

Gomes scored 21 points and grabbed 10 boards for the Wolves, who rebounded from a demoralizing 107-100 loss Tuesday night at Dallas in which they set a team record by blowing a 29-point, third-quarter lead.

"We had to put that behind us," Gomes said. "We played well in the first half but didn't play well in the second half against Dallas. Before we came out, we said we want to play like we did the first half against Dallas the whole game and see where it takes us. It led us to a victory tonight."

There were plenty of heroes to go around for the Wolves (7-25), who won for the third time in five games and improved to 3-10 under Kevin McHale.

Al Jefferson had 32 points and 10 rebounds, rookie forward Kevin Love added 19 points off the bench and Mike Miller pitched in with seven points in his first game back after missing the previous five because of a sprained right ankle.

"It was a good bounce-back win after what happened in Dallas," McHale said. "I'm happy. I'm proud of the guys."

McHale was particularly happy about his team's 39 free throws (they made 30) and 17 offensive rebounds.

He also was happy for Gomes, who came in averaging just 10.2 points per game and shooting 42.8 percent from the floor.

McHale's pregame advice: Keep shooting.

"He's been taking quality shots," he said. "I don't care if we miss good shots. I really don't. I don't care if they score on good defense, and I don't care if we miss good shots. I care if they score on bad defense, and I care if we miss bad shots."

Any concerns about a post-Dallas hangover were eradicated in the opening quarter as the Wolves, led by Jefferson's 13 points, shot to a 32-26 lead.

"I'd like to have had the 32 points in the third quarter at Dallas," McHale said, "but I guess you take them when you can."

The Warriors cut the deficit to two for the third time midway through the second quarter and took a 41-40 lead on Anthony Morrow's three-pointer with 5:40 to play in the half.

The lead changed hands 11 times in the next five minutes before Jefferson's layup at the buzzer sent the Wolves to the locker room with a 58-57 edge.

Golden State moved out to a 66-62 lead early in the second half, but unlike the Dallas game, the Wolves responded as Gomes scored 10 points during a 21-6 run that staked the home team to an 83-72 cushion.

Up 91-84 heading into the final 12 minutes, the Wolves didn't mess around.

Rodney Carney had a dunk during an early 6-0 run that made it 99-87, and the Warriors never again got closer than seven points.

Stephen Jackson had 25 points and Andris Biedrins 18 to lead Golden State (10-25), which dropped to 4-18 on the road.

Randy Foye added 17 points for the Wolves, who avenged a 113-110 overtime loss at Golden State on Nov. 11 and closed out a game for one of the few times this season.

They will try again for their first two-game winning streak of the season tonight at Chicago, having put that ugly loss at Dallas behind them.

"It's a new year," Gomes said. "Now we've got to look toward the future, and we started off the year 1-0. Hopefully, we can continue to get some wins."
