No winning streak for Timberwolves, who fall to Phoenix Suns

No winning streak for Timberwolves, who fall to Phoenix Suns
Back to the drawing board.

Coming off a surprising 106-80 road win over the Detroit Pistons, the Timberwolves were hoping to take another step forward in Wednesday night's game against the Phoenix Suns.

Instead, they reverted to form as the Suns led practically from wire to wire in a 110-102 spanking at Target Center.

Raja Bell hit a three-pointer to break a 4-4 tie with 9:45 to play in the first period and the Suns never trailed while running their record to 11-5 and dropping Minnesota to 3-10.

Al Jefferson had 28 points and set a team record with 12 offensive rebounds for the Wolves, who chopped a 16-point halftime deficit to five in the third period but failed for the third time this season to put together back-to-back wins.

Steve Nash had 20 points and Shaquille O'Neal added 18 points and 10 boards for the Suns, who outscored the home team 7-1 at the start of the fourth quarter to turn an eight-point lead into an 87-73 bulge.

The Wolves, who play Friday at Oklahoma City, never got closer than six the rest of the way.

The Wolves hit just two of their first nine shots, with Jefferson getting both hoops, as Phoenix raced to a 9-4 lead.

Minnesota closed to 11-9 on a Mike Miller three-pointer and Jason Collins' follow shot, but Nash hit back-to-back baskets while landing on the seat of his pants for an 18-13 Suns edge with 5:08 to go in the opening period.

The teams traded baskets the rest of the quarter, which ended with Phoenix sitting on a 28-23 lead.

The Suns outscored the Wolves 13-2 at the start of the second period to move out to a 41-25 advantage before O'Neal was called for goaltending on a Collins floater.

The Phoenix run included a technical foul on Wolves coach Randy Wittman, who was teed up by referee Eric Dalen for arguing a loose-ball foul on Sebastian Telfair.

The goaltending call on O'Neal ignited a 10-0 run by the Wolves, pulling them within 41-35, before Shaq ended it with a tip.

The Suns outscored the Wolves 16-8 the rest of the way to take a 59-43 lead at halftime.

Minnesota went on an 8-0 run with five minutes left in the third quarter to make it a 71-64 game and two Kevin Love free throws pulled the Wolves to within five, 73-68, with 1:54 to go in the period.

Phoenix got a three-pointer from Leandro Barbosa and two free throws from Boris Diaw, but Rashad McCants hit a three-pointer to make it an 80-72 game heading into the final 12 minutes.

The Wolves got it down to seven points twice, the last at 89-82, but O'Neal had a dunk sandwiched around four free throws as the Suns coasted home.

Jefferson, who had 17 rebounds in all, broke the team record of 11 offensive rebounds held by Kevin Garnett (Dec. 3, 2004, against Phoenix) and Felton Spencer (Dec. 11, 1990, Los Angeles Clippers).
