Minnesota Timberwolves Notes, Quotes 2008-06-18
--Three days after the team first worked out Brook Lopez, the Wolves brought six players with local ties to Target Center for a workout. Minnesota Gophers coach Tubby Smith watched former players Dan Coleman, Lawrence McKenzie and Spencer Tollackson work out along with Jonte Flowers and John Smith from defending NCAA Division II champion Winona State and Minnesota State Mankato center Atila Spantos. One or more of them could be added to the Wolves' summer league team.

--Billy McKinney, the team's original general manager when it began play in 1989, has resigned as the Wolves' radio analyst to become scouting director for new Milwaukee Bucks general manager John Hammond, whom McKinney helped hire as a scout and assistant coach in the team's early years.

--Kevin McHale said he'd like Brook Lopez to return to Minnesota to work out against other draft prospects due in town next week.

--Kevin McHale on the Detroit Pistons' firing of former Wolves coach Flip Saunders, whom he fired in 2005 after nine seasons with the franchise: "One thing about the NBA: You get hired to get fired. Actually, right now, coaches make pretty good money on their way out the door. Hey, it's tough."

There's still a chance the Wolves could come away from the draft with Kansas State's Michael Beasley, who four months ago seemed like a lock to become the No. 1 pick, if Miami's Pat Riley decides he'd rather pair O.J. Mayo with Dwyane Wade in his team's backcourt. But Beasley so far looks like he will work out only for Chicago and Miami.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "I thought it was supposed to be summer here." -- Californian Brook Lopez, during his workout, on a June day chilly even by Minnesota standards but one he'll remember fondly next winter if he is drafted by the Timberwolves.
