Minnesota Timberwolves Notes, Quotes 2009-11-27

Minnesota Timberwolves Notes, Quotes 2009-11-27--The Wolves drafted three point guards in the first round of last June's NBA draft. They kept two of them, traded the third and have just one playing for them this season.

The guy the Wolves drafted 18th overall and traded to Denver for a future No. 1 pick is thriving with the Nuggets: Ty Lawson is averaging 9.4 points and 3.2 assists while backing up former Wolves guard Chauncey Billups.

Perhaps most surprising is he's playing 21.6 minutes a game for demanding Nuggets coach George Karl.

"We never expected this from a rookie," Karl said. "What he gives us, no one else gives us on our team. The speed, the ability to push us up and down the court, his ability to play fast: We like to play that way."

Jonny Flynn, picked sixth, has started every game for the Wolves at point guard. Ricky Rubio, picked fifth, is playing in Spain, where he is expected to remain for at least the next two seasons.

--Rookie guard Wayne Ellington has played fewer than seven minutes in each of the past four games, including fewer than three Wednesday against Denver.

When the season started, coach Kurt Rambis said Ellington would receive valuable experience practicing against NBA players and traveling with an NBA team, no matter how much or how little playing time he received.

Now that he's struggling to find Ellington playing time, Rambis said sending Ellington to the NBA Development League to get him some playing time is an option.

"There are benefits for being around and practicing with an NBA team," Rambis said. "There's also a value in playing as well. Those are things that are open for discussion."

QUOTE TO NOTE: "Al needs to get it up into the 30 range. We're not a very good rebounding team." -- Wolves coach Kurt Rambis on Al Jefferson's four consecutive double-digit rebounding games.
