Minnesota Timberwolves Notes, Quotes 2009-11-02

Minnesota Timberwolves Notes, Quotes 2009-11-02--The Wolves must decide by Monday whether to offer Kevin Love, Corey Brewer and Oleksiy Pecherov contract extensions for the 2010-11 season.

Extending Love at a $3.64 million salary for that season is a given. During training camp, Wolves boss David Kahn he "couldn't fathom" not extending Brewer a $3.7 million offer.

If Kahn doesn't extend Brewer or Pecherov ($2.38 million), he'd save $6 million and give the team even more salary-cap flexibility -- with the option of signing multiple free agents, including perhaps one to a maximum contract -- for a long-awaited free-agent class next July.

With Love's contract included, the Wolves currently are only committed to salaries totaling roughly $27 million for the 2010-11 season. This season's salary-cap figure is $57.7 million.

If the contracts of Brewer and Pecherov aren't extended, they'll become unrestricted free agents next summer and the Wolves still could sign them then.

--With winter fast approaching in Minnesota, the Wolves flew to Phoenix Saturday morning and practiced at U.S. Airways Center. In past seasons, they would have practiced at Target Center and then flown later in the day.

Why the change?

Maybe because their new coach has lived most of the last three decades in Los Angeles and it was sunny and mid-80s in Phoenix over the weekend.

"Yes," Rambis said when asked if the plans were made for the players or the coach. "It's been pretty dreary in Minnesota the last few days. This was a chance to have some time and some sun."

QUOTE TO NOTE: "Not in this case. I keep telling myself I haven't played a real game like this since I got hurt. I want to pick up where I left off. I want to be the guy I know I can be. It's going to take some time. I get down on myself too much. I have to keep reminding myself it's only the third game we played tonight." -- Wolves forward Al Jefferson, coming back from February knee surgery, when asked if he's by nature a patient man.
