Minnesota Timberwolves Getting Inside 2009-11-18

Minnesota Timberwolves Getting Inside 2009-11-18Rookie guard Jonny Flynn knew the transition from Syracuse University to the Timberwolves wasn't going to be painless.

But he probably never imagined it'd be like this: Minnesota is off to a 1-10 start in his first season, with a firm coach who is grooming him by yanking him from games for bad shots and poor decisions.

Flynn has responded this way to such treatment:

More, please.

"Oh, he's definitely on me," Flynn said of Wolves coach Kurt Rambis while flashing one of his countless smiles. "But it's good for me. He's got to be harder on his point guard. Every coach in the league is going to be tough on the point guard because that's the heart of the offense, that's the engine that makes the train run.

"So I welcome it."

Good thing.

"I've sat him down for different things," Rambis said. "I realize he's going to make mistakes, and I sit on my hands through a lot of them. But if things become glaring, really detrimental, I have to give him some time to think about it."

Flynn gave Rambis something to think about late in Saturday's game at Memphis, the Wolves' 10th consecutive loss.

With 40 seconds remaining and the Wolves trailing by double digits, Flynn threw a bold cross-court pass toward Corey Brewer, who was cutting hard to the basket along the baseline.

Brewer stumbled and the ball sailed over his head, into the front row at FedEx Forum.

Rambis turned away and with great deliberation walked down the sideline, his hands in his trouser pockets, his head down.

Was he counting to 10?

"No, but that's what you get with youth," he said. "Trying to make the right play, trying to do the right thing, just not executing it well. Again, it was a poor decision, but hopefully these are things that he, and us, learn from. That's the nature of being young: You make mistakes. The determining factor is, us as human beings, that you learn from it."

GRIZZLIES 97, TIMBERWOLVES 87: The Grizzlies ended a seven-game losing streak and won for just the second time in 10 games this season, while the Wolves lost their 10th consecutive game after a season-opening comeback victory over New Jersey, the NBA's only remaining winless team.

The Wolves played without their two best players -- Al Jefferson and Kevin Love -- for the second consecutive game.

Jefferson has missed games on consecutive nights while he is in Florida, where his grandmother died Thursday not long after he arrived at her bedside.

Love hasn't played yet in the regular season because of a hand he fractured in a preseason game.

Without the two of them, the Wolves led by eight points early, were tied at halftime and then lost the game by surrendering a 21-10 run that spanned the third and fourth quarters.

Rudy Gay, O.J. Mayo and Marc Gasol combined to score 55 of Memphis' 97 points. The Wolves had five players reach double figures, with Corey Brewer's 16 leading them.
