Minnesota Timberwolves Getting Inside 2009-09-19

Minnesota Timberwolves Getting Inside 2009-09-19Snubbed by Ricky Rubio, Timberwolves president of basketball operations David Kahn wasted no time in his search for another point guard to supplement rookie Jonny Flynn.

As soon as he returned from Spain without Rubio, Kahn worked the telephones and signed Milwaukee restricted free agent Ramon Sessions to a four-year, $16 million offer sheet that the Bucks did not match.

Sessions' agent talked contract with the New York Knicks and Los Angeles Clippers much of the summer, but no offers came.

August gave way to September and Sessions remained free.

"I have been losing a lot of sleep over this," he said.

His agent told him something good might come completely out of the blue.

Then Rubio told Kahn he wanted to stay in Spain for at least two more seasons even after Kahn worked out a buyout agreement with Rubio's club team.

"When I found out that Rubio wasn't coming over, my agent and I talked about it and less than five hours later, they were calling," Sessions said. "It all worked out. The best situation is me being here."

Kahn turned toward Sessions because Flynn was the only point guard on the roster at the time and because Sessions is young and talented, two foremost qualities that Kahn is completely reconfiguring the Wolves around.

"He just turned 23 in April and in his short time in this league already has been a starter, had a triple-double, a 40-plus point game and 24 assists in a game," Kahn said. "That's quite a lot to accomplish in just two years of playing, especially two years coming straight out of college.

"We are thrilled to add him."

Kahn envisions Sessions playing both at the point and off the ball with Flynn in the same backcourt for a team he hopes will push the basketball.

He said Rubio's decision and the subsequent signing of Sessions just might be the best thing for his team.

"Ramon is 23 and Ricky is 18 and I think that Ramon is clearly more capable of helping us right now," Kahn said. "In a weird way, the team becomes more mature and improved with this move. I think we are starting to accumulate some really nice young talent. I'm very eager for this team to hit the floor."
